History of ZERO Slim & Healthy Noodles

ZERO Slim & Healthy Noodles(called Konnyaku/Shirataki noodles in Asian countries) have been used in Japan and China for over 2000 years. In the beginning, it was a precious gift between monks in the form of medicine and cakes.

The first documented use of Konnyaku tubers as food source in Japan was found in an ancient Japanese writing entitled, Man-you-shuu, which was edited in the 8th century. According to this writing, Konnyaku came from the southeast island region of Japan and was recognized and used as herbal medicine. It was first consumed in a form of a serving-size block. In later years, it was transformed into thin, gelatinous noodles known as “Shirataki” which literally means “white waterfall.”

During Japan’s Muromachi dynasty (14th – 15th century), Dr. Dosan Manabe described in his writing that a daily diet of Konnyaku is good for diabetes and certain types of cancers. During the Edo era, a well-known medical publication entitled Wakan Sannsai Zue (Japanese & Chinese herbal medicine manual) states that “Konnyaku is good for cleansing our intestine,”. Through generations, Japanese were told from their parents that “Konnyaku is helpful in cleansing one’s digestive tract of irritating and harmful substances, and for maintaining young, healthy and clean internal organs”.

Konjac is quite popular in Japan; almost every family eats Konjac in every meal. It is still the most favored food in Japan. The Ministry of Health in Japan implemented that konjac food should be used in the cafeteria for all schools. Right now, Japan is the largest consumer of konjac foods.
